Issue # 70: January 12, 2024 to January 19, 2024

Hey Reader.

Welcome to Issue # 70 of AWS Graviton Weekly, which will be focused on sharing everything that happened in the past week related to AWS Silicon: from January 12, 2024, to January 19, 2024.

Two quick things

I didn't want to start this without answering a fascinating question I got from one of you (Thanks Joe), and the question was simple:

Can you share the resources related to the new EC2 R8g instances?

Basically, what's the hype behind this new class of instances? The big difference is that they rely on Graviton 4, the new generation of Graviton processors which are a beast:

  • 96 Neoverse V2 cores,
  • 2 MB of L2 cache per core,
  • and 12 DDR5-5600 channels work together to make the Graviton4 up to 40% faster for databases, 30% faster for web applications, and 45% faster for large Java applications than the Graviton3.

Well, the best resources I can share with you are these:

If you have any additional questions, please reply to this email or simply send me an email at marcos@awsgravitonweekly.com

The second matter I wanted to share with you is that on February 1st, 2023, AWS will start charging you for IPv4 addresses, so you need to be prepared for this change.

A good tip I can share with you? Cristian Măgherușan-Stanciu (founder of LeanerCloud, and the creator of AutoSpotting) created this Open Source tool to check the potential costs for this.

Back to business.
