Hey Reader.

Welcome to Issue # 50 of AWS Graviton Weekly, which will be focused on sharing everything that happened in the past week related to AWS Silicon: from August 11th, 2023 to August 18th, 2023.

Before the usual weekly news, I want to do 2 quick things:

  • The first one to give a big shoutout to Corey Quinn (yep, THAT Corey Quinn), and the whole crew behind Last Week in AWS newsletter + podcasts. Thanks a lot for the incredible feedback you gave me this week, and more importantly for taking the time to do it. It means a lot for this guy here
  • And the second thing is taking a moment to congratulate the AWS Security team for the incredible design they have done with AWS Nitro hypervisor. Why I'm saying this now? Because after the news that AMD vulnerability known as "Zenbleed" was discovered, AWS published this:
AWS is aware of CVE-2023-20593, otherwise known as "
Zenbleed", and can confirm this issue affected AMD “Zen 2”, also known as “Rome”, CPUs that power the C5a, C5ad, G4ad, and G5 instance families. Because of the design of the EC2 Nitro hypervisor, there is no risk of cross-instance data access. The updated microcode from AMD has been applied to all C5a, C5ad, G4ad, and G5 instances. No action is required from customers using these instance types.
Security-related questions or concerns can be brought to our attention via aws-security@amazon.com

It's always great to know you are working with a great foundation.

I will take this opportunity to share some of my favorite resources to revisit AWS Nitro:

Now, back to business.

In this issue, you will find:

  • how Graphite uses a particular feature of AWS Aurora to save 90% of the costs
  • the availability of new Amazon EC2 instances like C7g, M7g, R7g, M7g and D3en in new regions around the globe
  • how Monzo Bank is using AWS Nitro Enclaves
  • a fascinating podcast episode about I4g instances
  • and much more

Enjoy.
