AWS Graviton Weekly # 56

Issue # 56: September 22, 2023 to September 29, 2023

Brought to you by CAST.AI

Hey Reader.

Welcome to Issue # 56 of AWS Graviton Weekly, which will be focused on sharing everything that happened in the past week related to AWS Silicon: from September 22, 2023, to September 29, 2023.

The past September 23, 2023, was the AWS User Group Peru Conf 2023, and if I have to qualify the event with one word is ELECTRIFYING.

I shared my thoughts about the event on LinkedIn and Twitter and the message is clear: the AWS community in Peru and LATAM in general is more alive than ever. Seriously.

But one of the things I noted in the event is that many people knew about Graviton, but they weren't using it on prod or some of them didn't know about it, mainly because there is not a lot of Graviton-focused content in Spanish.

Well, that particular aspect is changing: I will create more Spanish content related to the AWS Silicon Universe in the AWS en Español space on DEV.to.

If you want to help me with this, reply to this email and we will figure out a way to work together on this.

The other stuff I wanted to share with you were 3 tools I found this week focused on cloud optimizations:

  • InfraCost's VSCode Extension: shows you cost estimates for Terraform right in your editor! Prevent costly infrastructure changes before they get into production
  • InfraCost's CI/CD tool: Cloud cost estimates for Terraform in pull requests💰📉 Love your cloud bill!
  • InfraCost Cloud: the paid version of the product for Engineering teams, team leads, managers, and FinOps

And the highly recommended resource of the week? The Build On Costs Optimization live stream of today. Grab a pen and a notebook, and watch the entire thing. Believe me: you will learn a lot there.

Now, back to business.

SLIDES, AUDIO AND VIDEO

[Livestream] Build On on Cost Optimizations with Steph Gooch and Darko Mesaroš. If you have time, please watch the stream. It was amazing, and they and the guests shared a lot of cloud optimization tips there, including a lot of Graviton tips, and one of my favorite commands to save big:

aws ec2 modify-volume --volume-type gp3 --volume-id <ID> --region <region>

love to see my good friend Stephen Barr from CloudFix doing a demo and sharing a lot of tips in the process as well

And don't forget to check the Github repos mentioned in the live stream:

[VIDEO] AWS and Sumo Logic: Observability With OpenTelemetry, with Melissa Sussmann (Sumo Logic) and Michael Hausenblas (AWS)

Collecting the data that you need for monitoring and troubleshooting your applications is the first step of your observability journey. OpenTelemetry (OTel), an open-source project that aims to unify collection for logs, metrics, and traces, is changing the observability landscape as it establishes itself as the industry standard for instrumentation, collection, and correlation of telemetry signals. In this program, experts from AWS and Sumo Logic will provide an overview of the OpenTelemetry project and discuss how and why high-performing DevSecOps teams are increasingly adopting this standard.
