Hey.

New week? Perfect time to chat about AWS, AWS Silicon Universe and all cloud compute related stuff at AWS. This time from May 8th to May 15th, 2026.

Recommended reading of the week? The reason behind the recent AWS outage in the us-east-1 region (North Virginia). Hint: 🥵 🥵

And my favorite announcement of the week: Redshift gets the Graviton treatment (finally).

News

We continue to investigate instance impairments to a single Availability Zone (use1-az4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. We have experienced an increase in temperatures within a single data center, which in some cases has caused impairments for instances in the Availability Zone. EC2 instances and EBS volumes hosted on impacted hardware are affected by the loss of power during the thermal event. Other AWS services that depend on the affected EC2 instances and EBS volumes in this Availability Zone, may also experience impairments. We will continue to provide updates as recovery continues.

TL;DR: The datacenter was very, very hot

Why this one matters more than you think:

Today, we’re announcing Amazon Redshift RG instances, a new instance family powered by AWS Graviton. RG instances deliver better performance, running data warehouse workloads up to 2.2x as fast as RA3 instances at 30% lower price per vCPU. Their integrated data lake query engine lets you run SQL analytics across your data warehouse and data lake from a single engine with performance up to 2.4x as fast as RA3 for Apache Iceberg and up to 1.5x as fast as RA3 for Apache Parquet. This blend of speed, cost efficiency, and an integrated data lake query engine makes Redshift RG instances well-suited to handle the high query volumes and low-latency requirements of today’s analytics and agentic AI workloads.

What this means in simple terms? You will get better performance at a lower price per vCPU. It doesn’t matters if you are a startup or a big corporation: if you use AWS Redshift on a daily basis, this new instance type will be benefitial for your team.

Test it and let me know your thoughts in a reply.
